SUMMARY:Amphibian Week Hike @ Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Hall’s Lake Natural Area on May 9th at 11:00 a.m. for an Amphibian Hike to celebrate Amphibian Week! Hall’s Lake Natural Area is home to various types of wetlands\, making it the perfect home for many amphibian species. Often overlooked\, amphibians play a vital role in the forest ecosystem. Because they have permeable skin\, amphibians are also vulnerable to environmental toxins\, making them important indicator species (think the canary in the coalmine). We are going to hike the trails and see how many different species we can observe\, while learning fun facts about our amphibious friends!\n\nAmphibian Week was started in 2020 by the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) and partners to increase awareness about amphibians and to celebrate all things amphibian. It is celebrated annually the first full week of May.\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Halls-Lake-Natural-Area\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Marl Lake Conservation Easement Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of one of our favorite conservation easements! \nThe CWC currently works with individual landowners to protect the conservation values of 46 privately-owned properties. because these properties are privately-owned\, they are rarely open to the public. As part of the celebration of our 40th year\, we have arranged with a couple of our easement landowners to showcase these properties to the public. There will be a tour of a different easement scheduled in June. \nThis event is open only to current CWC financial supporters (must have made a donation within the past 12 months). Because this walk is taking place on private property\, we are limiting it to no more than 15 participants. Register for the walk by calling us at (989) 772-5777. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Exploration @ Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 23rd\, as we explore the fascinating world of vernal pools. Vernal pools are seasonal wetlands that typically fill with snow melt and spring rains but dry out during the summer months. Because of the seasonal nature of these pools\, fish are unable to survive in them. That makes them the preferred habitat for the reproduction of amphibians such as wood frogs\, spotted salamanders\, and blue-spotted salamanders.\n\nBe sure to wear rubber boots so you can better explore the pools! Boot disinfection station will be provided.\n\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Halls-Lake-Natural-Area\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Tree Planting @ Mill Pond Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, April 18th at 1:00 PM at Mill Pond Natural Area for a tree planting work party! Part of our work plan for this preserve includes the restoration and reintroduction of native plant species. \nDuring this work session we will be planting more than 350 trees and shrubs that will someday grow up to replace ash trees that were lost in recent years to emerald ash borer. \nThis event is BYOS – Bring Your Own Shovel. Limited numbers of shovels will be available\, but if you can bring your own that will be extremely helpful! \nInexperienced? We will show train you on the proper method to plant a tree before we turn you loose. \nParking for this event is at Chipp-A-Waters Park (1403 W. High Street). Mill Pond Natural Area is located immediately east of the park. \nPlease be aware that access to this property can be challenging for some because of the terrain and may involve climbing over numerous downed trees. \nThis tree planting event is funded in part by a grant from the Consumer’s Energy Foundation. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Spring Migration Watch @ Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us in witnessing the spring migration as vernal pool obligate species return to their ancestral breeding grounds on the first warm\, rainy evenings of the season. These amphibians show immense site fidelity\, most returning to the same pools they were born in.\n\nWe expect to see Spotted Salamanders and Wood Frogs at this site. Eastern Red-backed Salamander\, Four-toed Salamander\, Northern Leopard Frog\, Green Frog\, Northern Spring Peeper\, and Eastern American Toad are other amphibian species at this property that may be active. There is always a risk of not seeing our target species\, but we believe time in nature is never wasted!\n\n**This event is weather-dependent and subject to change.** Currently we are looking at favorable conditions this Friday evening\, but we may bump it to Saturday if that day looks better!\n\nBring a flashlight or headlamp. Rubber boots are recommended. Please disinfect boots with a 3% bleach solution prior to coming out. Because we want to mitigate negative impacts during this sensitive time\, we are requiring registration and limited attendance to ten people. Email autumn@cwc-mi.org to register.\n\n**Please be aware on the drive to the preserve that amphibians are on the move everywhere and often are traveling across roads to reach their wetlands. Be mindful on the roads that we do not increase mortalities as we observe these animals.**\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Halls-Lake-Natural-Area\n\n\n\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Groundhog Day Animal Signs Hike @ Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a winter hike through the woods of Hall’s Lake Natural Area on Sunday\, February 2nd at 1:00PM.  We’ll look for animal tracks and other sign along the lakeshore\, on the edge of wetlands and on the trails.  With a wide variety of habitats\, Hall’s Lake Natural Area probably hosts the widest variety of wildlife species of any Chippewa Watershed Conservancy property. \nWill we see a groundhog?  It’s very unlikely; they are sensibly hibernating at the time. \nDirections to the preserve: https://bit.ly/Halls-Lake-Natural-Area \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:January Not-Quite-Full Moon Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, January 11th at 7:00PM for a hike under the (almost) full moon at our Sylvan Solace Preserve.\n\nWe know the moon won’t be full until the 13th but that’s a Monday and we’d rather hike on a Saturday evening! By hiking on the 11th the moon will already be at 39 degrees above the horizon at 7PM versus only 17 degrees above the horizon at the same time on the 13th so we should have a much better view of it. Besides\, we don’t think most of us will notice the difference between a moon at 99.2% illumination (on the 13th) and one at only 96.1% illumination (on the 11th)…\n\nThis social hike is for everyone! We’ll hike along an approximately 1.2 mile loop on the flat trails at Sylvan Solace with several stops along the way.\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/SylvanSolacePreserve\n\n\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn
