SUMMARY:Hall's Lake Owl Prowl
DESCRIPTION:Here’s a fun way to spend an early summer evening. Join us at the Hall’s Lake Natural Area for an owl prowl! We know there are owls there\, because we have occasionally encountered one while engaged in other activities. But we’ve never made a serious attempt to find them. \nThis is a free activity\, but you must register in advance and we will limit the total number of participants to ten\, so it’s first come\, first served. \nWe will meet at 9:30 pm at the Neely Preserve area at the intersection of Old State and Broomfield Roads. This time of year it will still be light by then\, but we should be fully prepared for the prowl by dark. You may bring a flashlight to help find your way on the trails. \nSo get your reservation in now. Shhh…..No talking! \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Reading the Land
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder why a forest looks the way it does?  Learn how to “read” the visible clues in the forested landscape to further your understanding of forest ecology.  Learn how things like micro-topography\, plant succession\, and tree growth patterns can show the natural and human history of a forest. \nJoin us for this free event at Sylvan Solace Preserve\, as Isabella Conservation District Environmental Education Coordinator and CWC volunteer Mike LeValley gives us some practical examples. We will meet in the parking area at 10:00 a.m. \n  \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Preserve Steward and Easement Monitor Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As part of our due diligence\, we regularly visit each and every property we own to ensure that it is safe for visitors\, that nothing illegal or unpermitted is happening\, and that we know what kinds of stewardship activities (trail maintenance\, trash pickup\, sign repair\, invasive species removal\, etc.) need to be performed. With a minimum of staff resources\, and nineteen preserves to monitor\, we rely heavily on volunteers to help us keep “eyes and ears” on the land. About every three years we offer a stewardship training workshop\, and it’s that time again. If you are currently a preserve steward\, or if you are interested in becoming one\, we ask you to sign up for this periodic training. \nThis year we are expanding by offering the potential opportunity to become a conservation easement monitor. We are required at least once every year\, to visit each of the 34 conservation easements we hold to ensure that the terms of the easement are still being met. This is a unique opportunity to visit natural space that is not open to the general public. But it also requires a special sensitivity to landowner contacts. Depending on the level of interest\, we will be creating a roster of possible easement monitors and matching volunteers up with easements for further training. \nThis training will take place at the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy offices and Mount Pleasant Area Community Foundation conference room\, 306 South University Ave.\, Mount Pleasant. \nThank you to our friends at Pisanello’s Pizza for providing lunch! \nPlease register no later than Monday\, March 21st. \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Sneak Peak at Bundy Hill
DESCRIPTION:Bundy Hill is still privately owned and leased to hunting\, so opportunities for the public to visit are limited until we complete the project to acquire the property. But we are pleased to offer a chance for a limited number of supporters to the see it before it is open to the general public. For a contribution of $100\, the first 15 people to register will have a chance to walk the trails with biologist Dr. Doug Valek\, on Saturday\, March 19th\, at 10 a.m. We originally planned this as a snowshoe walk\, but this mild winter may make it a hike instead. We’ll let you know which when the date gets closer. If we go with snowshoes and you don’t have any\, we can help with loaners. Know that your contribution not only gets you an early look at the land with a local expert naturalist\, but it will also be matched by Isabella Bank\, getting us that much more quickly to our goal to make the land accessible to everyone. \nIf you are one of the lucky 15 we’ll let you know by email and tell you where to meet. \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Photography at the Peterson Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to just get out in the field with fellow photography enthusiasts for an opportunity to shoot and then learn how differently everyone sees? We’re not talking about a work shop. It’s just a chance to come out and enjoy the day together. We will offer the opportunity to send us your favorite half dozen shots from the day and we will feature them in a group album\, with credit to the photographer\, on our social media. Should be a fun interactive experience. And best of all\, it’s free. We will meet at the 79-acre Peterson Natural Area\, in the parking lot near the intersection of Angling Rd and 180th Ave\, at 10 a.m. We had a similar event in May at the Audubon Woods Preserve. The challenge there was a 100 percent wooded environment. The challenge here will be just the opposite – primarily open old fields with a small creek and wooded area. SUMMARY:Deer Exclosure Work Session
DESCRIPTION:It’s time to stretch the new fencing around the deer exclosure demonstration project at the Hall’s Lake Natural Area\, and we need your help. The posts are all installed\, bracing is in place\, the fencing is cut to length. We need to stretch and staple the fencing in place. We plan to start on Wednesday\, August 19th\, at 9 a.m. and get as much done as possible\, depending on the level of support available. Thursday\, August 20th is a contingency day in case we don’t get finished\, or if weather delays the start. Please come out and be a part of this important project to demonstrate the effects of deer browse on the forest understory. This is a chance to help with a long-term research project\, and every time you take a friend past the finished exclosure\, you will be able to point out that you had a part in this citizen science effort. Use the form below to register\, and indicate whether you are available the 19th\, 20th\, or both days. We will meet at 9 a.m. on August 19th at the parking area at the intersection of Old State Road and Broomfield Road to begin. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Once in a Blue Moon Moth Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Now here’s something we don’t do very often. Come on out to the Sylvan Solace Preserve and help us look for moths during the blue moon. \nLooking for moths during the summer is a late night event because it doesn’t get dark until late. CWC volunteer and Isabella Conservation District Environmental Educator Mike LeValley\, and CWC Executive Director Stan Lilley will be hanging sheets and using black lights to see what kinds of moths inhabit the woods and fields of Sylvan Solace. They also have a few other tricks up their sleeves to attract moths. \nWe will meet at the Sylvan Solace parking area off Pickard Road. This event is free\, but a $5 contribution is suggested. Don’t miss this opportunity. There won’t be another blue moon until May 2016.\nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Hall's Lake Natural Area Photographic Scavenger Hunt
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, June 27th\, for a scavenger hunt with a twist. Instead of gathering materials on a scavenger hunt list and bringing them back to the finish\, participants will use a flyer and Halls Lake Natural Area Map to find the landmarks indicated and take pictures of the designated “treasures” (ferns\, trees\, flowers\, etc.). You may bring a digital camera or use a smart phone to take your pictures. There will be some digital cameras available for loan if needed. \nThe hunt will begin promptly at 9:30\, from the Hall’s Lake Natural Area parking lot at the intersection of Old State and Broomfield Road\, so participants should arrive well before that\, and everyone is expected to return to the finish point by 11:30 to be included in the final count and to learn more about the Hall’s Lake Natural Area. \nThis is a buggy time of year\, so bring insect repellent. \nThere will be prizes for all participants\, including “Doozie Dollars\,” courtesy of Doozies Ice Cream Place in Mt. Pleasant\, CWC water bottles and hats\, and more. \nThis event is free and you do not need to be a member to participate\, but contributions to the CWC are encouraged. \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Aquatic Insect Identification Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This is a workshop geared for kids\, but adults are welcome too\, space permitting. Join us at the Sylvan Solace Preserve parking area\, where we will head for the river to set up. Kids will have an opportunity to dip nets into the water to scoop up samples of the local invertebrate life. We will then use a key sheet to help sort and identify what we find. SUMMARY:Environmental Education Day
DESCRIPTION:The Annual Environmental Education Day at Chip-a-Waters Park in Mount Pleasant is the high point of the school year for the Isabella Conservation District’s Environmental Education Program.  Every 3rd grade classroom in the county is invited to attend. Approximately 575 students and 100 adults attended last year. \nLast year there were nineteen different stations set up for the students to learn about a variety of environmental and conservation education topics.
