SUMMARY:"Under the Wolf Moon" at Sylvan Solace
DESCRIPTION:The waning moon will still feature plenty of light for a lovely evening ski under the moonlight. If you have headlamps\, you may certainly wear them. The trail is simple and navigates easily in the dark\, but if the timing is right\, we should see shadows and outlines once our eyes adjust. If the weather does not cooperate with a winter coating\, plan on walking the trail for a nighttime adventure looking for eye shine and listening for the sounds and sights of nocturnal animals on the move. We’ll end the evening with a tailgate warm-up in the parking area. From Mount Pleasant\, Sylvan Solace Preserve is located on the south side of W. Pickard Road between S. Gilmore and S. Littlefield Roads. \n[huge_it_forms id=”9″]\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Hooting Season at Hall's Lake
DESCRIPTION:Under the waxing Full Beaver Moon of November\, we’ll learn to call for the great hunters – the owls – and learn where they nest\, how they hear their prey\, and how they see. That “wise old owl” turn of the head is more than just a phrase! Meet at the Neely Preserve section of the Hall’s Lake Natural Area. Parking is available along Old State Road (“the slant road”). Bring flashlights\, but plan on using them sparingly. We’ll be using our “night eyes” for this one. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:The Great Pumpkin Float at Hall's Lake
DESCRIPTION:If you haven’t carved your pumpkin yet\, plan on making a masterpiece! Join us at Hall’s Lake picnic area and boat ramp for a contest that requires creativity\, dexterity and float skills. Prizes will be awarded for “Best Carved Pumpkin Alight” and “Best Great Pumpkin on the Water.” We’ll supply the candles; you supply the pumpkins. We’ll have treats and the grand float of candlelit pumpkins to end the evening. SUMMARY:Photography at Hall's Lake
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wanted to just get out in the field with fellow photography enthusiasts for an opportunity to shoot and then learn how differently everyone sees? This is not a work shop. It’s just a chance to come out and enjoy the day together. We will offer the opportunity to send us your favorite half dozen shots from the day and we will feature them in a group album\, with credit to the photographer\, on our social media. But first we’ll post them on our Facebook page without attribution and ask our friends to vote for their favorites. Then we’ll do the full reveal and recognize our “People’s Choice.” Should be a fun interactive experience. And best of all\, it’s free. The fall color should be popping. We will meet at the Neely Preserve parking area at the intersection of Old State and Broomfield Road. \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Geology at Sylvan Solace
DESCRIPTION:Even a relatively flat area such as Sylvan Solace Preserve can yield interesting facts about the pre-settlement history of the land. Is it glacial outwash? Is it a glacial end moraine remnant? What is the makeup of the rocks? Are they commonly found in this part of the State\, or were they brought from the Canadian Shield country far to the north by glacial activity? Can you see evidence of old stream flows that no longer exist? What can we learn from the river or river banks? Join us for a walk with Isabella Soil Conservation District Environmental Educator Mike LeValley and hear his take on the evidence at Sylvan Solace. This will be a leisurely walk around the preserve to see what clues are out there. We will meet at the Sylvan Solace parking lot off Pickard Road. \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Hall's Lake Owl Prowl
DESCRIPTION:Here’s a fun way to spend an early summer evening. Join us at the Hall’s Lake Natural Area for an owl prowl! We know there are owls there\, because we have occasionally encountered one while engaged in other activities. This time of year it will still be light by then\, but we should be fully prepared for the prowl by dark. You may bring a flashlight to help find your way on the trails. \nSo get your reservation in now. SUMMARY:Reading the Land
DESCRIPTION:Ever wonder why a forest looks the way it does?  Learn how to “read” the visible clues in the forested landscape to further your understanding of forest ecology.  Learn how things like micro-topography\, plant succession\, and tree growth patterns can show the natural and human history of a forest. \nJoin us for this free event at Sylvan Solace Preserve\, as Isabella Conservation District Environmental Education Coordinator and CWC volunteer Mike LeValley gives us some practical examples. We will meet in the parking area at 10:00 a.m. \n  \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Preserve Steward and Easement Monitor Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As part of our due diligence\, we regularly visit each and every property we own to ensure that it is safe for visitors\, that nothing illegal or unpermitted is happening\, and that we know what kinds of stewardship activities (trail maintenance\, trash pickup\, sign repair\, invasive species removal\, etc.) need to be performed. With a minimum of staff resources\, and nineteen preserves to monitor\, we rely heavily on volunteers to help us keep “eyes and ears” on the land. About every three years we offer a stewardship training workshop\, and it’s that time again. If you are currently a preserve steward\, or if you are interested in becoming one\, we ask you to sign up for this periodic training. \nThis year we are expanding by offering the potential opportunity to become a conservation easement monitor. We are required at least once every year\, to visit each of the 34 conservation easements we hold to ensure that the terms of the easement are still being met. This is a unique opportunity to visit natural space that is not open to the general public. But it also requires a special sensitivity to landowner contacts. Depending on the level of interest\, we will be creating a roster of possible easement monitors and matching volunteers up with easements for further training. \nThis training will take place at the Chippewa Watershed Conservancy offices and Mount Pleasant Area Community Foundation conference room\, 306 South University Ave.\, Mount Pleasant. \nThank you to our friends at Pisanello’s Pizza for providing lunch! \nPlease register no later than Monday\, March 21st. \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Sneak Peak at Bundy Hill
DESCRIPTION:Bundy Hill is still privately owned and leased to hunting\, so opportunities for the public to visit are limited until we complete the project to acquire the property. But we are pleased to offer a chance for a limited number of supporters to the see it before it is open to the general public. For a contribution of $100\, the first 15 people to register will have a chance to walk the trails with biologist Dr. Doug Valek\, on Saturday\, March 19th\, at 10 a.m. We originally planned this as a snowshoe walk\, but this mild winter may make it a hike instead. We’ll let you know which when the date gets closer. If we go with snowshoes and you don’t have any\, we can help with loaners. Know that your contribution not only gets you an early look at the land with a local expert naturalist\, but it will also be matched by Isabella Bank\, getting us that much more quickly to our goal to make the land accessible to everyone. \nIf you are one of the lucky 15 we’ll let you know by email and tell you where to meet. \nError: Contact form not found. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn
