SUMMARY:Summer Wildflower Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, August 9th from 1:00PM to 3:00PM for a hike at one of the CWC’s underappreciated preserves. Much of the 79-acre Peterson Natural Area is composed of open fields that are perfect for summer wildflowers. We’ll find different species of wildflowers in the wet meadow along the creek that bisects the preserve and in the dry sandy hillsides and swamp near the back of the preserve. Expect to see lots of butterflies and other pollinators! \nAs there are no trails throughout most of the preserve\, long pants are recommended. \nPeterson Natural Area is located near Big Rapids on the corner of 180th avenue and 11 Mile Road. The parking lot is along 180th Avenue. \nDirections to the preserve http://bit.ly/PetersonNaturalArea \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Hickory Hill Easement Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of one of our favorite conservation easements! \nHickory Hill Easement is located in Clare County\, northwest of the Village of Farwell along M-115. The property encompasses more than 500 acres of mostly forested land and includes a lake in its center. This property was once owned by local lumberman Josiah Littlefield and has remained in the possession of his descendants for over 100 years. \nThe CWC currently works with individual landowners to protect the conservation values of 46 privately-owned properties through conservation easements. because these properties are privately-owned\, they are rarely open to the public. As part of the celebration of our 40th year\, we have arranged with a couple of our easement landowners to showcase these properties to the public. \nBecause this walk is taking place on private property\, we are limiting it to no more than 20 participants. Register for the walk by calling us at (989) 772-5777. Directions to the easement property will be given to those who register. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Nature Journal Club @ Weting Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we embark on a journey to slow down\, observe\, and document our surroundings through the art of nature journaling! Our next meeting will take place at Weting Preserve in Clare County on June 10th at 11:00 a.m.\n\nWe will visit a CWC preserve each meeting and go on a short hike to find the perfect spot to settle in and let our creativity flow. We will guide you through the process of nature journaling while you harness the power of observation to deepen your understanding of the environment. Discover how to create a personal keepsake of your outdoor adventures\, from sketching intricate details to recording your thoughts and reflections. Swap stories\, exchange tips\, and inspire others to continue exploring and protecting our natural world.\n\nPlease bring your own supplies: a notebook or sketchbook and pens\, pencils\, markers- or whatever your medium of choice is!\n\nDirections to the Preserve: https://bit.ly/WetingPreserve_directions\n\nBe aware that GPS has been known to take folks to the wrong side of Monroe Rd that is blocked by a gate and you will have to do some backtracking.\n\nEither make sure your GPS is taking you to the preserve traveling from the WEST or under the assumption the majority of participants will be traveling from south or east of the preserve\, this is the recommended route:\n\nTake 115 heading NW to Lake Station Ave (turn North or Right). This turns into Ashard Rd follow the curve (North or Right) to continue on Grass Lake Ave. When that curves to the East take an immediate Left turn (West) on East Norway Ave\, follow this until you come to Monroe Rd. Turn East (or Right) on Monroe and continue straight on the seasonal dirt road. You will see a two-track to the right\, DO NOT take that. Weting Preserve will be on the South (Right) side of the road soon after.\n\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Amphibian Week Hike @ Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Hall’s Lake Natural Area on May 9th at 11:00 a.m. for an Amphibian Hike to celebrate Amphibian Week! Hall’s Lake Natural Area is home to various types of wetlands\, making it the perfect home for many amphibian species. Often overlooked\, amphibians play a vital role in the forest ecosystem. Because they have permeable skin\, amphibians are also vulnerable to environmental toxins\, making them important indicator species (think the canary in the coalmine). We are going to hike the trails and see how many different species we can observe\, while learning fun facts about our amphibious friends!\n\nAmphibian Week was started in 2020 by the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) and partners to increase awareness about amphibians and to celebrate all things amphibian. It is celebrated annually the first full week of May.\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Halls-Lake-Natural-Area\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Marl Lake Conservation Easement Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of one of our favorite conservation easements! \nThe CWC currently works with individual landowners to protect the conservation values of 46 privately-owned properties. because these properties are privately-owned\, they are rarely open to the public. As part of the celebration of our 40th year\, we have arranged with a couple of our easement landowners to showcase these properties to the public. There will be a tour of a different easement scheduled in June. \nThis event is open only to current CWC financial supporters (must have made a donation within the past 12 months). Because this walk is taking place on private property\, we are limiting it to no more than 15 participants. Register for the walk by calling us at (989) 772-5777. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Exploration @ Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 23rd\, as we explore the fascinating world of vernal pools. Vernal pools are seasonal wetlands that typically fill with snow melt and spring rains but dry out during the summer months. Because of the seasonal nature of these pools\, fish are unable to survive in them. That makes them the preferred habitat for the reproduction of amphibians such as wood frogs\, spotted salamanders\, and blue-spotted salamanders.\n\nBe sure to wear rubber boots so you can better explore the pools! Boot disinfection station will be provided.\n\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Halls-Lake-Natural-Area\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Tree Planting @ Mill Pond Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, April 18th at 1:00 PM at Mill Pond Natural Area for a tree planting work party! Part of our work plan for this preserve includes the restoration and reintroduction of native plant species. \nDuring this work session we will be planting more than 350 trees and shrubs that will someday grow up to replace ash trees that were lost in recent years to emerald ash borer. \nThis event is BYOS – Bring Your Own Shovel. Limited numbers of shovels will be available\, but if you can bring your own that will be extremely helpful! \nInexperienced? We will show train you on the proper method to plant a tree before we turn you loose. \nParking for this event is at Chipp-A-Waters Park (1403 W. High Street). Mill Pond Natural Area is located immediately east of the park. \nPlease be aware that access to this property can be challenging for some because of the terrain and may involve climbing over numerous downed trees. \nThis tree planting event is funded in part by a grant from the Consumer’s Energy Foundation. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn
