The main focus of these sessions is the removal of autumn olive (an invasive shrub) with a secondary focus on non-native honeysuckles and Japanese barberry.\n\nThese three introduced shrubs spread prolifically and crowd out native vegetation. Removal of these plants will hopefully lead to increased diversity of native species. SUMMARY:Summer Wildflowers at Peterson Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday August 21st\, 2021 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM for a hike at one of the CWC’s underappreciated preserves. Much of the 79-acre Peterson Natural Area is composed of open fields that are perfect for summer wildflowers. We’ll find different species of wildflowers in the wet meadow along the creek that bisects the preserve and in the dry sandy hillsides and swamp near the back of the preserve. Expect to see lots of butterflies and other pollinators!\n\nAs there are no trails throughout most of the preserve long pants are recommended.\n\nPeterson Natural Area is located near Big Rapids on the corner of 180th avenue and 11 Mile Road. Coffee donated by The Corner Cup Coffee Shop in Remus.\n\n12:00PM-1:30PM Vertical Mile Challenge Award Ceremony – Join us as we celebrate those that have already completed the 2021 Bundy Hill Vertical Mile Challenge. After the ceremony\, kickstart your own attempt at the Challenge by joining us on a hike to the summit.\n\n3:00PM-5:00PM Geology Hike – Did you ever wonder how all those big rocks ended up on top of Bundy Hill and where they came from? Join us for a hike that is all about the geology of the region and Bundy Hill in particular. Geologist Fred Heck (recently retired from his position as Resident Geologist at Ferris State University) will lead this hike.\n\n\n6:00PM-8:00PM Women’s Hike – Join our third women’s hiking group outing of the year for a return trip to Bundy Hill.\n\n8:45PM-10:15Pm Sunset Hike – Join us for a sunset hike to the summit. Flashlights are required (headlamps recommended!) as we’ll be coming back down the trails in the dark. DESCRIPTION:Who’s up for an adventure?\n\nWe normally host our night hikes on the flat trails of Sylvan Solace Preserve. These hikes are usually held on or around the full moon so there’s lots of natural light.\n\nFor our fourth night hike of the season\, we’re going to Bundy Hill during a new moon! For those you unfamiliar with moon phases\, a new moon means that there will be no moonlight that night as it will be below the horizon for the entire night.\n\nJoin us on Saturday March 13th at 6:30PM as we brave Bundy Hill in the dark.\n\nNormally we try to hike at night without light\, but for this hike it is REQUIRED that every participant bring a headlamp (highly recommended) or flashlight for safety. We also recommend that you do not try to make this your first night hiking experience.
