SUMMARY:CANCELLED Invasive Species Removal Work Session @ Williams-Blackburn Preserve CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:THE INVASIVE SPECIES REMOVAL WORK SESSION AT WILLIAMS-BLACKBURN PRESERVE SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW (APRIL 14TH) IS BEING CANCELLED DUE TO HIGH WINDS CREATING DANGEROUS CONDITIONS.\n\nJoin us at 5:30PM on the last three Thursdays in April (April 14th\, 21st\, and 28th) at Williams-Blackburn Preserve for our first weekly invasive species work sessions of 2022.\n\nThe main focus of these sessions will be the removal of autumn olive (an invasive shrub) with a secondary focus on non-native honeysuckles and Japanese barberry.\n\nThese three introduced shrubs spread prolifically and crowd out native vegetation. Removal of these plants will hopefully lead to increased diversity of native species. In addition\, removal of the densest stands of autumn olive will open up the understory and allow for the construction of trail in the future..\n\nWe provide all necessary equipment – all you have to do is show up ready to work.\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Williams-BlackburnPreserve\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Big Tree Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 10:00 AM on Tuesday\, December 21st as we celebrate one of mankind’s oldest holidays\, the Winter Solstice\, with a special hike at Sylvan Solace Preserve.\n\nAlthough the solstice marks the beginning of winter\, it also marks the beginning of a new solar year for those of us in the northern hemisphere\, with the sun reaching its most southern point on the eastern horizon before beginning its six month journey northward again.\n\nIn Europe\, plants played a major role in the celebration of the Winter Solstice (also known as Yule) with traditions such as decorating the halls with boughs of holly\, mistletoe\, pine\, spruce\, and fir (all considered sacred because they retained their foliage throughout the long winter); the decoration of live evergeen trees (the origin of our Christmas trees); and on the eve of the solstice a Yule log (often an entire tree) was set ablaze to burn through the night.\n\nWe’re not going to be decking the halls or decorating trees (and definitely not setting any yule logs ablaze!) but we will be celebrating the trees themselves by visiting the five largest trees at Sylvan Solace preserve – the largest of which trees has a diameter of nearly 5 1/2 feet!\n\nDirections to the preserve:\nhttp://bit.ly/SylvanSolacePreserve\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Stewardship Sunday at Audubon Woods Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Audubon Woods Preserve on Sunday October 10th for our (probable) final Stewardship Sunday of the year. The planned focus of this session will be the removal of autumn olive (an invasive shrub) from along Wing Road and the interior of the Preserve.\n\nAutumn olive is an invasive species that spreads prolifically and crowds out native vegetation. The worst growth is along the south-facing roadside where ample sun allows the species to readily take hold.  Removal of these plants will hopefully promote increased diversity of native species.\n\nWe provide all necessary equipment – all you have to do is show up ready to work.\n\nhttp://bit.ly/AudubonWoodsPreserve\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Invasive Species Removal Work Session
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Sylvan Solace Preserve on Thursday October 7th for a weekly invasive species removal work session. The main focus of these sessions is the removal of autumn olive (an invasive shrub) with a secondary focus on non-native honeysuckles and Japanese barberry.\n\nThese three introduced shrubs spread prolifically and crowd out native vegetation. Removal of these plants will hopefully lead to increased diversity of native species. In addition\, removal of the densest stands of autumn olive will open up the understory and allow for a planned trail expansion.\n\nWe provide all necessary equipment – all you have to do is show up ready to work.\n\nhttp://bit.ly/SylvanSolacePreserve\n\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Summer Wildflowers at Peterson Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday August 21st\, 2021 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM for a hike at one of the CWC’s underappreciated preserves. Much of the 79-acre Peterson Natural Area is composed of open fields that are perfect for summer wildflowers. We’ll find different species of wildflowers in the wet meadow along the creek that bisects the preserve and in the dry sandy hillsides and swamp near the back of the preserve. Expect to see lots of butterflies and other pollinators!\n\nAs there are no trails throughout most of the preserve long pants are recommended.\n\nPeterson Natural Area is located near Big Rapids on the corner of 180th avenue and 11 Mile Road. The parking lot is along 180th Avenue.\nDirections to the preserve http://bit.ly/PetersonNaturalArea\n\nAfraid you’ll get lost? CWC Executive Director Mike LeValley will be at the CWC office (306 S. University Ave.) in Mt. Pleasant at 12:00 Noon – parking is at the rear of the building. You can follow him to Peterson Preserve from there.\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:The Ferns of Audubon Woods
DESCRIPTION:Ferns are one of the oldest groups of plants on earth – with a fossil record dating back around 400 million years. In our opinion\, they’re also some of the coolest plants!\n\nJoin local naturalist Cathy Murray and CWC Executive Director Mike LeValley on Saturday August 7th at 10:00AM for a guided hike at the Audubon Woods Preserve as they search for the preserve’s common and uncommon fern species.\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/AudubonWoodsPreserve\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Trail Building at Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve ever walked the Outback Trail at Hall’s Lake Natural Area\, you’ve probably noticed that it just kind of ends…\n\nWe want to change that.\n\nJoin us on Sunday July 25th from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM for a trailbuilding session.\n\nWe’ve already started construction on a brand new loop trail that should improve everyone’s hiking experience. Combined with a planned staff work session this week\, we hope to be able to complete the trail during Sunday’s work session.\n\nWe’ll provide all tools and training. SUMMARY:Invasive Species Work Session
DESCRIPTION:We like olive oil and olive bread and olives on our pizza but we don’t like autumn olive.\n\nAutumn olive is a shrub native to Asia. It was planted in Michigan to provide wildlife habitat\, to provide food for songbirds and gamebirds\, and to control erosion. It does all of these things\, but it doesn’t play well with others…\n\nAutumn olive is a bully! It spreads like crazy. It crowds out native plants and changes the soil chemistry to reduce competition from other species. It even turns out that the nutritional value of its fruit to birds isn’t that high. Now we have these vast monocultures of a shrub that isn’t all it was advertised to be.\n\nJoin us at one of our Thursday evening work sessions on June 3rd\, 10th\, 17th\, or 24th as we work to control and eradicate this species on Sylvan Solace Preserve.\n\nNo experience necessary. We’ll provide the tools and training.\n\nWatch the weather! In the event of rain\, the work session will be canceled.\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/SylvanSolacePreserve\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn
