SUMMARY:Summer Wildflower Walk at Peterson Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday August 20th\, 2022 from 1:00PM to 3:00PM for a hike at one of the CWC’s underappreciated preserves. Much of the 79-acre Peterson Natural Area is composed of open fields that are perfect for summer wildflowers. We’ll find different species of wildflowers in the wet meadow along the creek that bisects the preserve and in the dry sandy hillsides and swamp near the back of the preserve. Expect to see lots of butterflies and other pollinators!\n\nAs there are no trails throughout most of the preserve long pants are recommended.\n\nPeterson Natural Area is located near Big Rapids on the corner of 180th avenue and 11 Mile Road. The parking lot is along 180th Avenue.\nDirections to the preserve http://bit.ly/PetersonNaturalArea\n\nAfraid you’ll get lost? CWC Executive Director Mike LeValley will be at the CWC office (306 S. University Ave.) in Mt. Pleasant at 12:00 Noon – parking is at the rear of the building. You can follow him to Peterson Preserve from there.\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Invasive Species Work Session
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 5:30 PM every Thursday evening in July at Sylvan Solace Preserve for weekly invasive species work sessions. \nThe main focus of these sessions will be the removal of autumn olive (an invasive shrub) with a secondary focus on non-native honeysuckles and Japanese barberry. \nThese three introduced shrubs spread prolifically and crowd out native vegetation. Removal of these plants will hopefully lead to increased diversity of native species. In addition\, removal of the densest stands of autumn olive will open up the understory and allow for the future trail construction. \nWe provide all necessary equipment – all you have to do is bring plenty of water and show up ready to work. \nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/SylvanSolacePreserve \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

DESCRIPTION:Join CWC Executive Director Mike LeValley for a tour of the mid-summer wildflowers of Sylvan Solace Preserve.\n\nIn 2021\, Mike identified more than 200 species of flowering plants at Sylvan Solace. On this trip we’ll only experience a small fraction of that number but mid-summer does have some of the most spectacular flowers of the year.\n\nThe hike will start at 10:00AM and will run for approximately two hours.\n\nSignificant portions of this hike will off-trail on rough terrain.\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/SylvanSolacePreserve\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Stewardship Sunday - Garlic Mustard Pull
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Mill Pond Natural Area for our May Stewardship Sunday.\n\nThe focus of this event will be pulling invasive garlic mustard plants. Garlic mustard is alleleopathic\, meaning it releases chemicals into the soil that inhibit the growth of desired native plants. Each garlic mustard plant has the potential to produce thousands of seeds. Eventually\, if left uncontrolled a garlic mustard monoculture is left.\n\nNo need to bring anything . We’ll provide gloves and garbage bags.\n\nIf you want to take home some of the garlic mustard to cook (saute or make into pesto)\, bring your own containers.\n\nParking for this event is at Chipp-A-Waters Park (1403 W. High St.\, Mt. Pleasant). The preserve is located next to the park.\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Easement and Preserve Monitor Training
DESCRIPTION:Are you always out hiking on CWC preserves?\n\nAre you looking for a way to help make our preserves better?\n\nAre you interested in seeing some of the special places that we protect through conservation easements?\n\nConsider becoming a preserve or easement monitor this year!\n\n\n\nJoin us on Saturday May 7th at 10:00AM at Sylvan Solace Preserve for a hands on training session. Current monitors are not required to attend but are encouraged to do.\n\nPlease register for this training by calling (989) 772-5777. Attendance of this training does not commit you to becoming a monitor. If you are interested in becoming a monitor but are unable to attend this session give us a call.\n\nVolunteer Monitors help us protect the conservation values of these special places by being our eyes on the ground. Easement monitors typically visit conservation easements once a year to check on current conditions and ensure that no violations of the easement have occurred. After a monitoring visit\, monitors submit a 2 page report about their visit.\n\nPreserve monitors are also required to submit a single report during the year but can submit as many reports about their assigned preserve(s) as they wish over the course of the year.\n\nDuring this session you’ll learn about the type of things to look out for while monitoring\, the photos we’d like to see from monitors\, and how to complete a monitoring report.\n\n\n\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Invasive Species Removal Work Session
DESCRIPTION:Join us at 5:30 PM every Thursday evening in May at Williams-Blackburn Preserve for our weekly invasive species work sessions.\n\nThe main focus of these sessions will be the removal of autumn olive (an invasive shrub) with a secondary focus on non-native honeysuckles and Japanese barberry.\n\nThese three introduced shrubs spread prolifically and crowd out native vegetation. Removal of these plants will hopefully lead to increased diversity of native species. In addition\, removal of the densest stands of autumn olive will open up the understory and allow for the possible future trail construction.\n\nWe provide all necessary equipment – all you have to do is show up ready to work.\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Williams-BlackburnPreserve\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn
