SUMMARY:Vernal Pool Exploration @ Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 24th\, as we explore the fascinating world of vernal pools. Vernal pools are seasonal wetlands that typically fill with snow melt and spring rains but dry out during the summer months. Because of the seasonal nature of these pools\, fish are unable to survive in them. That makes them the preferred habitat for the reproduction of amphibians such as wood frogs\, spotted salamanders\, and blue-spotted salamanders.\n\nBe sure to wear rubber boots so you can better explore the pools! Boot disinfection station will be provided.\n\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Halls-Lake-Natural-Area\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Tree Planting @ Mill Pond Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, April 20th at 9:00 AM at Mill Pond Natural Area for a tree planting work party! Part of our work plan for this preserve includes the restoration and reintroduction of native plant species.\n\nDuring this work session we will be planting more than 350 trees and shrubs that will someday grow up to replace ash trees that were lost in recent years to emerald ash borer.\n\nThis event is BYOS – Bring Your Own Shovel. Limited numbers of shovels will be available\, but if you can bring your own that will be extremely helpful!\n\nInexperienced? We will show train you on the proper method to plant a tree before we turn you loose.\n\nParking for this event is at Chipp-A-Waters Park (1403 W. High Street). Mill Pond Natural Area is located immediately east of the park.\nPlease be aware that access to this property can be challenging for some because of the terrain and may involve climbing over numerous downed trees.\n\nThis tree planting event is funded in part by a grant from the Consumer’s Energy Foundation with additional funding provided by Immanuel Lutheran Church of Mt. Pleasant.\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Prep for Tree Planting @ Mill Pond Natural Area - Invasive Species Removal Work Session
DESCRIPTION:Help us clear space for planting native trees! We’ve ordered 450 native trees and shrubs to plant this spring but we need to clear more space before we plant. With planting scheduled for April 20th\, this our last chance to prepare more space!\nJoin us on Thursday April 18th at 5:00pm for a weekday invasive species removal work session at Mill Pond Natural Area. Removing these invasive species will both provide more room for us to plant and improve their chances of success by removing competition.\nNo experience is necessary to participate. We’ll provide tools and training.\nPlease be advised that access to this property may be challenging for some because of terrain and the many dead and downed trees blocking routes in.\nParking for this event is at the east end of Chipp-A-Waters Park (1403 W. SUMMARY:Spring Migration Watch @ Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us in witnessing the spring migration as vernal pool obligate species return to their ancestral breeding grounds on the first warm\, rainy evenings of the season. These amphibians show immense site fidelity\, most returning to the same pools they were born in.\n\nWe expect to see Spotted Salamanders and Wood Frogs at this site. Blue-spotted Salamanders have not been observed here yet but are a possibility. Northern Leopard Frog\, Green Frog\, Northern Spring Peeper\, and Eastern American Toad are other amphibian species at this property that may be active. There is always a risk of not seeing our target species\, but we believe time in nature is never wasted!\n\nThis event is weather-dependent and subject to change.\n\nPlease bring a flashlight or headlamp. Rubber boots are recommended. Please disinfect with a 3% bleach solution prior to coming out. Disinfection will be also provided on-site.\n\n**Please be aware on the drive to the preserve that amphibians are on the move everywhere and often are traveling across roads to reach their wetlands. Be mindful on the roads that we do not increase mortalities as we observe these animals.**\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Halls-Lake-Natural-Area\n\n\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:February Full Moon Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday\, February 23rd at 7:00PM for a hike under the (almost) full moon at our Sylvan Solace Preserve.\n\n\nWe know the moon won’t be full until the 24th but by hiking on the 23rd the moon will already be at 13 degrees above the horizon at 7PM versus only 3 degrees above the horizon at the same time on the 24th. Besides\, we don’t think most of us will notice the difference between a moon at 99.8% illumination (on the 24th) and one at only 98.3% illumination (on the 23rd)…\n\n\nThis social hike is for everyone! We’ll hike along an approximately 1.2 mile loop on the flat trails at Sylvan Solace with several stops along the way.\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/SylvanSolacePreserve\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn
