SUMMARY:Forest Bathing at Audubon Woods Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a mindfulness hike as we experience the forest in a unique way through the act of “forest bathing.” This term comes from the Japanese practice\, shinrin-yoku\, the act of immersing yourself in the atmosphere of the forest and using all of your senses to deepen the experience. We will meander the property at an easy pace to fully take in our surroundings. Minimal talking is encouraged during the walk\, with time for discussion and reflection after. \nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/AudubonWoodsPreserve \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Spring Migration Watch @ Hall's Lake Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:Join us in witnessing the spring migration as vernal pool obligate species return to their ancestral breeding grounds on the first warm\, rainy evenings of the season! Vernal pools are temporary wetlands that typically fill in the spring and dry out in summer or fall\, creating a perfect fishless nursery habitat for amphibian species. These amphibians show immense site fidelity\, most returning to the same pools they were born in.\n\nWe expect to see Spotted Salamanders and Wood Frogs during the spring migration at this site\, but many other amphibian species at this property may be active. There is always a risk of not seeing our target species\, but we believe time in nature is never wasted!\n\n**This event is weather-dependent and subject to change.**\n\nBring a flashlight or headlamp. Rubber boots or waterproof shoes are recommended. Please disinfect footwear with a 3% bleach solution prior to coming out. Because we want to mitigate negative impacts during this sensitive time\, we are requiring registration and limited attendance to twelve people. Email autumn@cwc-mi.org to register.\n\n**Please be aware that during the drive to the preserve amphibians are on the move everywhere\, and often are traveling across roads to reach their wetlands. Be mindful on the roads\, so that we do not increase moralities as we observe these animals.**\n\nDirections to the preserve: http://bit.ly/Halls-Lake-Natural-Area\n\n\n\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:CANCELED - New Year's Day Sunrise Hike - CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of this weekend’s ice storm\, it’s probably no surprise that the conditions of our trails and parking areas is poor. Unfortunately that means that we’ve decided to cancel our annual New Year’s Day Sunrise Hike at Bundy Hill.\n\nAlthough Bundy Hill and the other CWC Preserves remain open\, we recommend that you avoid visiting them until conditions approve. If you feel that you must go out\, crampons or other traction devices are an absolute necessity.\n\nStaff will return to our normal work schedule next week and we’ll be out clearing storm damage from the preserves. We’ll update conditions as we go.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

DESCRIPTION:Based on the anticipated conditions of the trail and (especially) the parking lot at Sylvan Solace preserve\, We’ve decided to cancel the Luminary Hike Scheduled for this Sunday evening. \nThe parking lot is already slick and the trails are a sloppy mess with some areas of ice. With continued rain throughout the evening and a return to freezing temperatures overnight and lasting through the weekend\, we don’t see conditions improving. We decided to make the decision now so everyone has time to see the news. The Luminary Hike will return again in 2026. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Preserve Stewardship Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Interested in becoming more involved with the CWC? \nIf you visit one of our preserves on a regular basis\, you might be a good candidate to become a Preserve Steward!\nStewards do many things. At a minimum\, Stewards visit preserves frequently\, make note of any problems (and fixing the problems when they can)\, and report back to CWC staff. Stewards also complete annual monitoring reports for their assigned preserve. Within their capabilities\, Stewards can tackle tasks such as tree trimming\, trail maintenance\, and invasive species removal. During scheduled work sessions\, stewards may be asked to take charge of additional volunteers or even coordinate volunteers. \nIf this sounds like something you’re interested in\, please join us on Saturday\, November 8th at 9:00am at the CWC offices at 306 S. University Ave. in Mt. Pleasant. We’ll start in the office and then move out to a preserve for some hands on training. Registration is required to attend. \nPlease call (989) 772-5777 to register. If you are unable to attend\, but are interested in becoming a Steward please give us a call. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn

SUMMARY:Walk Through of Mill Pond Natural Area
DESCRIPTION:It’s been a while since we gave a tour of our 17-acre Mill Pond Natural Area – Walter & France Bolle Preserve! \nThe last tour was in January of last year and a lot has happened since then. Over the past 22 months\, CWC staff and volunteers have continued the hard work of restoring the property. We’ve removed thousands more invasive trees and shrubs\, planted hundreds of native trees\, and the native grass and wildflower seeds that we planted in 2023 and 2024 have taken root. We think it’s time to show off the progress and talk about the future of the property! \nJoin us on Sunday\, November 2nd at 2:00 PM for a walking tour of the CWC’s only urban preserve. \nMill Pond Natural Area is located adjacent to Chipp-A-Waters Park (1403 W. High Street\, Mt. Pleasant) and parking for this event will be at the park. \nPlease note that the entirety of this walk will be off-trail and may be challenging for some participants. \nShareEmailTwitterFacebookRedditTumblrPinterestLinkedIn
